But Heards Ferry and Ison Springs are not geographically close to each other. Heards Ferry feeds into Riverwood and Ison Springs feeds into North Springs. Most of the Ison population went to Dunwoody Springs before, and that school still has majority minority students (55% black, 20% Hispanic, 17% White), even after the alleged nefarious plot to "get out the apartment kids."

So, I don't really think that accusation has legs.

Heards Ferry wasn't very diverse to begin with. (In fact any services they receive from SSEF are actually paid for by their PTA, they don't qualify for free stuff from them, they never have.) And HF isn't a very large building. (they are actually getting a new school soon. Location is horrible in my opinion, it will be interesting to see what impact that might have.)

I actually think the biggest "winner" was a very small school, Spaulding Drive Elementary and Woodland elementary also benefitted. BUT they both needed real relief from overcrowding.

With the exception of HF, which has never been very poor, there isn't an elementary school in SS that isn't diverse and dealing with a FRL rate that is close to or exceeds the state average.

Understood. The post above mine just seemed to imply that Heards Ferry was somehow benefitting from "apartment kids" being moved to Ison, and that's just not the case. They're too far apart and don't serve the same part of Sandy Springs.

I can see how you got that impression from my post. The main point was just that I'd heard there was a big uproar about drawing the lines with respect to the apartments in Sandy Springs. That was the stink, if you will. There were some that said all of the lines should have been drawn a littld differently and that more apartments should have gone with Heards Ferry. It was just a bunch of fuss about creating apartment city schools, intentionally. I was telling the poster that inquired what ppl were saying as I was not involved or closely following.

What do you think about how the lines were drawn, since you have more info.?

There aren't many renters in the Heards Ferry district. Very few apartments and the price to rent a single-family home in that area would probably be too high for most. I think it's very similar to the APS schools Morris Brandon, Sarah Smith, and Jackson. Renters are priced out of the school. Whereas Ison Springs and Dunwoody Springs are on pretty much immediate opposite sides of Roswell Rd. where there are tons of apartments. Those transient populations are challenging and the classrooms are often in flux throughout the year. So, a lot of people in those areas choose to go private. I'm zoned for Dunwoody Springs, and all but 1 or 2 families in my subdivision go private, and those 1 or 2 are all in high school.

I can't really think of any way to redistrict other than what they did. The largest volume of kids in those schools are, indeed, apartment kids. They really actually split them up as opposed to zoning apartment kids "out" of any one school. As far as Heards Ferry, they weren't there to begin with.

It has legs.

Ison Springs pulled apartments from Spalding Drive and Woodland...especially Spalding Drive.

And there was "shifting" as well...so a school was affected even though it may not share a close or direct borderline with the newer schools.

I actually drove through that community for the first time yesterday. Nice well kept community. Huge mansions in the back with older looking homes towards the front. Well kept yards/homes etc. I have no kids but based on the area, demographics and the families I saw I bet their kids are in private schools. The apartment complexes around are safe but filled with all kinds of people and a good percentage of minorities, so just assuming people probably want their kids in separate schools based on test scores, etc.... The HS in the are is North Springs and their is a private school near called the Weber School. All in all the community is in a good area. It shares the main road to the apartments but it's way off on the side, so it looks private and secluded.....
