It's not going to be high-speed rail, though. When people think of "high speed rail", they think of 150-250 mph bullet trains zooming along the track (that's what Texas Central Railway plans on building). Unfortunately, this "compact" doesn't envisage high-speed rail, but higher-speed rail:

Quote:
Officials who advocate high-speed rail for the Southeast aren’t talking about Japan-type speeds of 200 mph or more. Rather, the rails would allow for top speeds of 110 mph and average speeds between 85 mph and 87 mph. Speeds now top out at less than 80 mph.

I'll take higher-speed over the standard Crescent speeds anyway. It's a step, and really we don't need bullet trains yet, Accela would do us just fine.

They need to be working on this. This will still make for faster trips than by car, and in some cases plane by the time you consider the going through the airport. People need options.
