I like highways for some reason. I'm pretty much a Georgia highway nerd/aficionado. I was just wondering how wide the highways in Atlanta get though. I know here in Augusta, they get up to 10 lanes (5 in each direction). Thanks for the replies!

You couldn't just look this up on Google Maps/Earth? lol

But the widest would be the downtown connector, 85 in Gwinnett, and 75 in Cobb each at 14 lanes (7 each direction), probably 16 in spots.

Widest is 75 just north of Delk Road. 7 lanes SB. 8 lanes NB. No HOV lane, just normal free lanes. The 15 through lanes make it the widest in the system as of 2004. Note that it's through lanes so HOV, C/D, frontage lanes don't count to wideness.

There are a couple of sections where the highway has as many as 20 lanes where C-D (collector-distributor) lanes are added to the mainline lanes:

> Where Interstates 75 and 85 merge/split/intersect at the southern end of the Downtown Connector just south of the GA 166 Langford Parkway interchange (Lakewood Interchange) where the roadway has as many as 21 lanes total for a brief stretch with C-D lanes...

> On I-85 in the area of the GA 316 interchange between Pleasant Hill Road and GA 120 Duluth Highway where the roadway widens to 20 lanes total with C-D lanes.

We have too wide of freeways here. Takes up too much valuable land that could be producing tax money.

Here in DFW, they're starting to use sunken express/hov lanes to keep from having to continually widen and take up more real estate.

Augusta is Georgia's second largest city. Still, almost half the size within the city limits compared to Atlanta. The Augusta metro area (which of course stretches into neighboring South Carolina) is only 1/4 to 1/5 the size of Metro Atlanta ( a little over a million if I have heard correctly) That said, Augusta seems to be a nice mid sized metro. Not everyone wishes to live in the biggest city ever (and we all know that Atlanta doesn't even fit that bill. LOL
