And here's a link to another article discussing this. The article mentions that Pinewood Atlanta, where the film academy will be located, "has quickly become the unofficial movie studio for Marvel movies."

The local paper makes it sound a bit more definitive. Apparently they are already hiring for positions at the academy in Fayetteville. Apparently this is going to be a pretty legit school as it is something that is going through the State Board of Regents. But class sizes are small at 50 students. Hopefully that can grow to something larger.

While that's going on, across the street they are whipping up a relatively large mixed used project. It is to be called Pinewood Forrest and will supposedly tie in nicely with the studio and Piedmont Fayette hospital. The developer has continually referenced the Seaside development in Florida as the benchmark to exceed.

A little more details:

The conceptual plans to be developed over multiple phases include 600 single family homes, 600 multi-family units, 100 townhomes, two hotels, a mix of office and retail space, several pocket parks, and a chapel.

Pinewood Atlanta, Georgia Film Academy To Host Sundance Event For Indie Talent

EXCLUSIVE: Pinewood Atlanta has recently played host to such major studio titles as Passengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming. But the facility is also looking to attract indie filmmakers. This afternoon (January 20), and in partnership with the Georgia Film Academy, it will host an event aimed at indie filmmaking talent at the Sundance Film Festival. Frank Patterson, who recently took up the role of President Pinewood Atlanta Studios, will chair the presentation and networking event in partnership with the GFA’s Jeffrey Stepakoff.

Film industry growth in Georgia is projected to generate between 3000 and 5000 new jobs in the next three-to-five years. With that in mind, Pinewood Atlanta says it’s keen to affirm its commitment to attracting independent creative filmmaking talent to its studio complex which boasts 18 purpose-built sound stages and provides a full-service offer for the production of films, TV programming, music and video games — and access to fiscal incentives from the state..."

I'm glad to hear this. Pinewood is big enough to host multiple productions at one time, even with the big-budget Marvel movies going on there now. The place is enormous and has so much to offer smaller and independent films from a support and crew standpoint. The more projects going on at once (or overlapping) means nonstop employment for even more people. I'd love to see Pinewood land a TV series as well.

Pinewood Forrest is also rising pretty fast across the street. It's exciting what all is going to be down there -- a true "live, work, create" community for the film industry! So proud of my hometown!

I wonder how much Pinewood charges for studio rental and other associated costs, because it seems like it would be too much for most independent films. Those are some swank sound stages with features that no other studio in the south has.
