First, Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, asserted that he felt safer in Israel than in New York or Chicago.

Then, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., fired back. From Buzzfeed:
“People from outside of New York, certainly from the South or the West — they seem to have this compulsion to look upon New York as this high-crime den of evil,” said King. “The fact is, if we’re going to single an area out for being dangerous, Atlanta would come far ahead of New York.” …

Because New York is “culturally different” from other parts of the country, King suggested, “they just then accept this total exaggeration and distortion about New York being the center of crime.”

I think some folks do make the mistake of assuming that because New York is diverse it must be dangerous. It turns out NYC has half the violent crime rate of the ATL.

No, he represents the 11th district, which is Cobb, Cherokee, Vinings, part of the city of Atlanta and points north.

IMO, this is one ignorant individual making a blanket statement about New York, and big cities in general, and then another ignorant individual making a retaliation blanket statement about Atlanta as a whole.

Why is Peter King taking a shot at the West in his retort? What did we do to NYC?

Peter King is an enormous 90's hip-hop fanatic and he's never gotten over the East Coast / West Coast feud. Some wounds never heal.

It sounds like a lot of cheap political pot shots all the way around. I know about Peter King mostly from his fear mongering for maintaining surveillance.

I am from the south, and I did not feel unsafe in NYC. I have never been to Israel so I do not have an opinion about whether it feels safer. The place I have felt the least safe ever was Gary, Indiana.
