This would be huge for ATL....

As General Electric mulls a move from its Connecticut headquarters, Georgia’s leaders want the conglomerate to know it will welcome them with open arms.

Gov. Nathan Deal spoke with GE officials this week after chief executive Jeff Immelt told employees he is considering a move to another state with a “more pro-business environment.” Immelt said the $40 billion budget approved by state lawmakers Wednesday would impose “significant and retroactive tax increases for businesses.”

Deal’s top aide, Chris Riley, said Georgia pounced on the opportunity.

“They are currently residing in a state that just raised taxes again, and their CFO stated over the weekend that if the state continues to promote an anti-business environment, they will be forced to look elsewhere,” said Riley. “Gov. Deal wanted the phone number for the CEO to simply call and tell him about Georgia and its business environment and make sure he knew Georgia was open for business.”

Georgia is eager for a big economic development win after it lost the bid for Volvo’s first U.S. plant to South Carolina this month, and luring GE’s headquarters would do just that. The company employs more than 5,700 people in Connecticut, including about 800 at its Fairfield headquarters.

We already have GE Power Systems headquarters here. Seems like it would be an easy sell to get the whole shebang. I feel sorry for Schenectady NY, though. I didn't know they had moved to CT.

Possibly, but Power Systems was at Wildwood Parkway in the Cumberland Area. I guess it's GE Energy Systems now. I worked there around 9/11 (remember watching it on the company feed of MSNBC). They've shifted things around since then, it looks like.

Apparently a tax issue.

Currently, General Electric has approximately 5,700 employees working at its headquarters. Along with General Electric, other companies including Travelers Cos Inc. and Aetna Inc. are also planning to move to another state, where the environment is more business friendly.
Aetna said that it will have to bear a 27% increase in the annual $65 million state tax bill. This increase will ultimately affect the company’s profit margins; this is the main reason why General Electric is looking to move out from Connecticut as well.

Wonder how much we will have to give away to attract these guys. I bet the incentive war will be intense with this one.

I'll say this: If Georgia has a more business-friendly tax climate than Connecticut, then there should be no need for the state government to use any tax incentives for them to move here. There's no reason to give such incentives to companies the size of GE anyway, especially considering GE pays no federal taxes. If they want to relocate, they can spend their own money to do so, and they can pay the same taxes to the state of Georgia that other businesses in the state already do.
