michigan as a state did this in 1996; it was called proposal E and allowed casinos to be built within the state, after a pitch from MGM Grand. we could and should learn from this example and really research whether or not the casinos have improved detroit's downtown.

if anyone needs any more convincing on why this is a stupid idea, detroit has an MGM and you can see the change it's made.
Again the key word is imagine.

Anyone with any business knowledge would know that opening up a MGM Grand Vegas version in Atlanta would be just as profitable since Atlanta has more visitors than Las Vegas and since they will only be only casino in town they are guaranteed to be more profitable.

Detroit's convention and airport traffic is no where near the level of people Atlanta's could draw.Tourist need something else to do Downtown and the casino is a good option. Detroit is not a good example and should not be use as a grid for Atlanta. The Gulch would be a perfect area for the casino development as nearby Castleberry and Marietta would only enchance this development at the Gulch.

If this was done to that quality level, and with MGM Grand I would imagine it would be even nicer, I think it would be a success downtown. I see arguments against it, but I think it could be a good fit somewhere near or @, the Gulch. This could also be a very very good way to get the MMPT going. Casino next to the terminal, it's a selling point for the casino and tourism in general for Atlanta.

Large portion of the gambling tax revenue goes to TRANSIT then I'm 100% in! This could be that revenue stream so many transit projects need to come to fruition.
As if the state would ever allow that to happen. No they would steer the money away to pay for pet projects or more roads in suburban and rural GA.

But we all know the reality of that situation is most of Detroit's ills was the auto manufacturing industry fleeing the city to cheaper places around the world.

I hardly think it is the casino is the cause.

i didn't mean to imply that the casino is the reason detroit is the way it is today; i'm just saying it hasn't really helped detroit much at all.

I don't quite agree with that exactly.

I think Detroit just needs something that is a far larger shift in their regional economy.

Atlanta's economy, particularly downtown, is heavily invested into tourism and merchandise trading. So it becomes a complementary asset to the existing economy. And we don't have the problems or the hole to fill that Detroit does, so it isn't really a great comparison.

Right, Five Points has been a mess for the last 15 years, it hasn't stopped our convention industry.

Downtown needs residents, while you are dreaming, imagined if the tens of thousands of workers lived Downtown, then ask them if they want a Casino.

If I decided to move to say 200 Peachtree as one of those thousands of new residents, why would you think it would bother me if a Casino was built at the Gulch anymore than it would if the say Aquarium doubled in size?
