Thinking about moving to Alpharetta. Looking at buying house in Fairmont subdivision off Route 9. Just called and average WINTER gas bill is 250-300. Is that typical? House is about 2,000 square feet, wood frame, built 1999.
Can someone give me an idea of what your average electric bills are in summer and gas bills in winter?

I think I would drop dead if I got a $300 utility bill.

Doesn't sound right. My house is about 3500 sq feet. Our gas bill this month was $48. Electric last month was $198, this month was $313, but we had a freon leak that was causing the unit to be on constantly in an effort to cool. We replaced the system this week.

I should have said that was the average WINTER gas bill. The house has gas stove and gas furnace.

The 980/yr breakdown to ~40/month from April to October ~150 from Nov - March

In summer bout 66% of the bill is AGL fees, Taxes, Customer Service Changes.

Also I Locked a good 12month Contract rate when the rates were low.

I noticed that the house in question has a fireplace, Is it gas?

Running the Gas Fireplace will drive up the bill alot.

Btw: Nice looking house. Nice lot.

Keep a close eye on the meter, check windows/doors for drafts, broken seals, check how well things are caulked, check to see if basement/crawlspace has insulation under the floorboards, have an energy efficiency audit.

Re the gas fireplace - if it's a combination, then just use the gas on full only to light duraflame logs and afterwards keep the gas on very very low, use duraflame logs for creating the light and additional heat. You may have to chimney sweep every few years, but it's worth it. Run creosote sweeping logs on occasion.

I have a ~3000 sq ft house built in 2000
Avg electrical bill (year-round average, higher in summer obviously): 200
Avg gas bill: 50
Winter gas bill: 80
Summer electric bill: 300

Oh, one other thing ... I ruthlessly shop around for low gas rates, and I align my new contracts on the cheapest times of the year.

You don't even have to change providers when shopping around. I use Infinite Energy, because I like their customer service. They aren't the cheapest out of the box, but they will match any 12-month rate I can find.
