I can't believe I'm in the South. After 20+ years living in SoCal, the adjustment was easier than I thought. I lived in LA proper - Studio Row 90046,90029, 90068, 90019,90016. Also South Bay too. So I said that I wanted to be in somewhat proximity to the city ie; (West Covina, The Valley, Cerritos if your from LA) moderate traffic and resources with a good school district. Here is more county represented verses city or block like LA. I looked at South (Fayette) North (Gwinnett, Cobb, Dekalb, Cherokee) West (Douglas, Paulding) and East (Covington, Stone Mountain - forgot county..).

I wanted to be semi rural, good schools, farmers markets, no HOA and alternatives to the freeways during rush hour. I also wanted options of meat markets and some strip malls, food diversity (Thai, Ethiopian, Mexican, chinese) .

I left all the other big LA stuff behind - Ms Gooch's , Mall Valet, Uber, 24hr cleaners, Muscle Beach, Tommy burger, In-N-Out, Melrose type thrift stores with espresso, Pink Dot, BevMo, Chin Chin.

Yes I adjusted to the bugs, long convos at supermarkets ("hey baa") and Chik fil a.

I found that Cobb and Paulding have been a good fit for me. No regrets. I'ts all relevant. Cost of living? Yes but Des Moines and Omaha are cheaper but who wants to live there?

And guess what my (213, 323,424,818,805,714,626,951,909) family? Del taco is here now, JET, Amazon Prime, Southwest Air, and Palm restaurant too.

6% sales tax. Remember those days LA (circa 84') 35 mile commute 1 hr.yes.

Good news! ATL is getting exotic too with Turkish to Istanbul and Qatar Airlines to Doha coming next summer.

You can do it. Just enjoy the conversations at the market, biscuits (occasionally) and the furniture guy with a Glock Handgun on his waist..laughing.

You want food diversity? Buford Highway is the place to go. Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai--you name it, they've probably got it.

I love the write up! What you did wasn't just a move to the south though, it was a transition to a different lifestyle. You could have had much of the same experience going from in the city to out rural just about anywhere. But it's awesome that you like it here.
