We are a retired couple relocating to the Atlanta area to be close to our daughter. We are looking in the Scottdale area. Does anyone know anything about this area? We need to be close to services and facilities (ie. medical, groceries, libraries, malls) but also want to be able to safely traverse the neighborhood beyond any subdivision we might select. If anyone has any information about this area, please post.

The City of Decatur is very close to Scottdale and is a delightful place to live with lots of activities, shops, cafes, parks, a fabulous library, and a MARTA rail station in the center of the city square. You haven't mentioned a price range or whether you're looking for a detached house or a condo, but you should know Downtown Decatur is rather pricey. Nearby North Decatur (Medlock Park area) is also very close to Scottdale and is just about a mile from North DeKalb Mall, Toco Hills Shopping Center, and Downtown Decatur. It has a neighborhood park, nearby libraries (one is currently being remodelled and will reopen in a year). Both areas are equally convenient to DeKalb Medical Center. The Medlock Park area is considered very affordable by intown Atlanta standards as far as home prices.

Welcome!

IntownHomes is right about Downtown Decatur. It's adjacent to Scottdale and is very walkable community with unique cafes, bars, and restaurants. It also has a beautiful square with a MARTA station in the middle.

Avondale Estates is on the other side of Scottdale and is largely comprised of beautiful single-family homes with a unique downtown in the form of a German or Swiss Alpine Village. If you head east of Avondale along Rockbridge Road, you will find newer subdvisions with homes designed in the classic Georgia Cracker style of architecture.

One other area to consider in Scottdale is the Old Mill Town, which is off of E Ponce. It's hidden, but it has a lot of old, well-preserved homes. It's like going back in time.

Last but not least, I have to mention that one of the coolest things about Scottdale is the DeKalb Farmers Market, which is a large market with any type of fresh produce and cuts of meat that you want. It offers a lot of international foods and thus is heavily frequented by many foreign expats here in Atlanta. It's one of my favorite spots in the city to shop and it show just how international this place has become.

Good luck!
