Yes, it's only because of sheer incompetence...nobody in Fulton County, or in the State for the matter, knew what they were doing. It's just merely a coincidence that of "more than 40,000 newly registered voters — most of them [who are] young, low-income, and black — vanished from the rolls." It doesn't matter if the majority of leadership is black or white, do you really think nobody has ever worked against the needs of their own communities to gain power or money for themselves? It happens. Disenfranchising black voters allows the government to maintain the status quo, which is money and power in North Fulton. You're blind to how politics and policy functions if you truly believe there was no purposeful foul play at hand here. I don't think it's really that absurd to assume that when a "majority of young, low income, and black" newly registered voters vanished from the rolls that systematic racism is at play here. If the statement was, "40,000 newly registered voters whose races are proportionate to the racial make-up of those new registered voters and the county mysteriously disappeared from the rolls", then I'd agree that the statements arguing that the county intended to disenfranchise blacks and democrats is absurd. But that wasn't the statement - open your eyes and stop being so blind to reality.

It doesn't matter what the county is. The county as a whole doesn't control the elections or registrations. The Board of Registration and Elections does, and it is not dominated either party. It is 3/5 white, with two confirmed democrats, two confirmed republicans, and a chair that is probably a democrat. I'd call that a pretty even split.

Board of Registration and Elections

Current Members:

Ms. Mary Carole Cooney, Chairperson (white, probably Democrat)

Mr. Stan Matarazzo, Vice Chair (white Republican)

Mr. David J. Burge (white Republican)

Ms. Rukiya S. Thomas, (black Democrat)

Mr. Luther W. Beck (black Democrat)

Looks like we may have a major--and frightening--scandal right in our own backyard.

Oh wow. I hope this gets lots of national attention. This needs to be cleaned up.

That's why it's hard to see this as some sort of nefarious conspiracy.

I don't know if it's a nefarious conspiracy, but without all the facts, and in light of all the voter suppression laws targeted towards minorities and the poor, can you honestly blame minorities for drawing that conclusion?

People who are already registered don't require any work. So logically, the newer ones, who would tend to be apartment dwellers and renters, would be more likely to be younger and lower income. That's kind of a "Duh" thing.

And they didn't mysteriously disappear. They didn't got processed in time.

Take off the tin foil hat. Maybe then you would see reality instead of conspiracy.

You do know the director from 2012 ended up in jail. He violated the probation for his DUI. The board fired him for that and his failures in the previous election cycle. Kind of screams incompetence-both of the board for hiring him and not knowing about it and the director himself. Not sure about the latest one, but he clearly inherited a mess.

Yes. Its pretty ridiculous to believe that Fulton County is deliberating targeting Democrats.

And its pretty obvious that Fulton County is incompetent in about everything it does if you pay any attention at all to the news.

The county also does do the hiring for the department.

That's an overly broad statement. Nobody is saying what you think they are. However, It's been a well known fact for decades that North Fulton thinks very poorly of South Fulton. So it's not a stretch to think that the North Fulton faction on the board might be pulling some dirty tricks to gain influence by reducing the influence of people in South Fulton.

I agree that Fulton County government is a ***** show, but that doesn't preclude some or most of them from also being corrupt.

The failure to process them on time is only one of their several offenses.

Sam Westmoreland was not fired, He resigned.
