Why keep a pool when you can keep a pontoon boat?

Also many yards slope which might make installation more difficult?

The city of Atlanta has numerous public pools, as do many YMCAs. There is little need to waste the money installing a private pool and maintaining it when there are numerous public options.

The same thing is true in Dallas.

Not to mention many apartments/condos/neighborhoods have pools too. I have known lots of people over the years who had backyard pools, so I'm still not convinced that there is a shortage of them here.

The main reason is practicality. Its not really warm enough for outdoor swimming for a good 6 months out of the year (Nov-April, give or take a month).

It gets cold here, and there are no shortage of bugs and other woodland creatures, which means that an pool owner will be doing pool maintenance year around through seasons you cannot use the pool and even in 40ºF weather on cloudy days.

After all, you can enjoy a yard when its 50ºF and partially cloudy (without having to cut the grass every week), but not a pool.

Backyard swimming pools seem to be much more common even in Quebec than in metro Atlanta...

This has been discussed before in the ATL subforum. Generally, mid-tier suburban subdivisions won't have pools in every backyard, especially if its billed as a swim/tennis community.

One advantage to having your own backyard pool: swimsuits not required.
