From Every Corner of State, Georgians Want Transit - Transit Talk - Curbed Atlanta

Outside Atlanta, Georgia cities see connections as the way to leverage prosperity | The Augusta Chronicle

Quote:
...mayors from across the state are interested in pursuing federal grants to build a train network that could prompt an "All aboard for Atlanta!" cry. At a recent panel discussion, the mayors of Augusta, Macon and Columbus voiced support for the creation of transit infrastructure between their cities and ours. Led by the mayor of Macon, the influential group is advocating not for more lanes on the interstates, but instead for a rail network criss-crossing the Peach State, which seems like a startlingly progressive idea...

Of course they want it. They just don't want to pay for it. If they want it, here is the bill. Make it happen.

Columbus is pushing hard. Feasibility studies are complete and it shows to be profitable. Fingers crossed.

Hard to believe.

With sufficient speed (not current Amtrak speeds)
Chattanooga-Atlanta-Macon-Savannah-Jacksonville, yes
Birmingham-Atlanta-Athens-Augusta-to the Carolinas, yes

The rest seem pretty doubtful.

For long-term operation, there was even talk of self-sufficiency; according to the August Chronicle, the mayor of Columbus cited a study that a rail link between her city and Atlanta would be economically viable and even a boon to both cities.
Economically viable, not necessarily profitable. The point, I think is that those mayors feel that the cost to run is bearsble compared to the options that effective intercity rail opens up.

Macon would be the first stop with a heavy commuter rail having stops on the way to the Atlanta Airport.

Of course the mayor would think it is bearable... because their budget wouldn't have to subsidize the difference. Make the cities wanting to join subsidize the rail operating costs and see how economically viable they think it is.
