Im gonna be spending a few days in Atlanta next week. While my goal is mostly to visit the city, I'd also like to take some sort of day trip to a place nearby with a more rural feel. I don't have anything too specific in mind, but i'm looking for a "rural Georgia" kind of experience. Maybe visit a small village with a historic town center and a couple of cool shops, or some sort of river cruise, or maybe even a farm that organises visits. I don't know really, just something fun with a country feel. Any idea where I might be able to find something like that within, say, an hour and a half drive from Atl?

All ideas welcome. Thanks.

Kennesaw, Canton, Waleska, Jasper, Ellijay, Dawsonville, Hellen.
Hellen used to be the place but it may have declined, not sure.
Ellijay has apple houses that are busy this time of year.
Jackson to the south has the typical courthouse square.
They all seem to be getting more modern all the time.
Maybe Blue Ridge.

Serenbe as well. It doesn't have a "downtown" per se but it fits the rest of your criteria.

Kennesaw is not rural at all. I'd say Cartersville, a bit more than 20 miles north of Kennesaw, meets what you're seeking, in part.

Cartersville is little large. Senoia is just south of Atlanta and has been featured on the Walking Dead.

Serenbe in South Fulton, the north Georgia mountains, Senoia (where the walking dead was filmed)

Side note: Kennesaw and rural in the same sentence? Maybe in 1980.

I love Blue Ridge. It's about 1.5 - 2.0 hours from the middle of the city. Wonderful downtown filled with boutique shops and great food spots. Mercier Farms is right out of town and is fun to visit. If it's apple picking time, you can go out in their orchard and pick apples. They have a hay ride, too.

Senoia , as others have mentioned would be my first choice of places with a rural feel that are just outside of Atlanta. Dahlonega and Blue Ridge are also hard to beat for the same reason. Each one is just lovely in their own rite .

I would recommend Conyers and Covington GA, it's the Orginial Filming Locations of the 80's TV Shows the Dukes of Hazzard and the Heat of the Night. You can go Downtown Covington Square and see the Hazzard County Court House and where the General Lee used to Cut Corners and area's where ramps were jumped, lol..It's like 30 miles east of the City on I-20. I must admit alot of Paving and Suburban Sprawl has caught up with Hazzard County, but there is still enough of its rural side to be enjoyed there, especially in Covington/Newton County. Senoia isnt a bad pick as well, its the home and filming location of the walking dead as the earlier poster stated.
