A Google search for "crime" and "30044" turns up several useful tools, many of them with maps.

i've already done that, which is why in my question i specifically ask for input of people currently living in the area, or people who lived there in the past. a map isnt the same thing as a first hand account of someone living in the area. Thanks for your input though.

I live in the way southern portion of 30044 right next to 30078 and I drive through that area quite a bit (in fact, going to eat at a place off Old Norcross in just an hour). I would not live in the northern parts of 30044. It seems to have more crime especially near Pleasant Hill. It's fine during the day but not so much at night.

There are much better areas not too far away.

Thanks for your your helpful input. I was wondering just how bad the area is compared to the southern portion. I can see from the crime maps that things like battery and assault are more frequent, but just wanted to get a first hand account. Thanks for that, I will be taking a look towards the southern area.

Sorry about that. Even in my own area, tho, I'm somewhat dependent on those web sites to find out what is happening because we don't see crime in my subdivision. It tends to happen out of ear and eyeshot. I see that as a good thing.

Generally I'd stay away from areas north and near US 29/Lawrenceville Hwy. Towards Five Forks Trickum Rd is better.

Do you have kids? The schools can vary greatly.
Work location?
Budget?
I'd hate to steer you to a place that you can't afford or unnecessarily adds time to a commute.

yes 2 kids, but aren't school age yet, not for another 3 years. Renting before buying. Work is in Suwanee, so I think Lawrenceville would be fine for a commute.

Budget, I was looking at 1300 first, but wanted to save a bit more while renting so took it down to 1100, I can see now that I more than likely will need to up it back 1300 in order to get a nice area.

Since you don't need schools yet you don't have to choose a location in a good school cluster but generally the good schools and good areas coincide in Gwinnett.
"Lawrenceville" can mean a dozen different areas with several different schools ranging from bad to excellent. The Central Gwinnett HS cluster has the actual city of Lawrenceville and a lot of the areas that you want to avoid.
If you go south of Lawrenceville, Brookwood and Grayson clusters are great but Sugarloaf Pkwy traffic south of 316 can range from bad to terrible. You won't find apartments in the Brookwood area, just houses. Grayson has some if that's what you're looking for.
If you go north of Lawrenceville you have a lot of nice areas. The area near 316 is a little more iffy due to commercial and industrial activity but the farther north you go (and closer to Suwanee) the more residential and nicer it gets.
Much of Duluth is nice, just stay away (and north) from Gwinnett Place mall. That area has been down for a long time.
