We need to start a fund to get this guy to come intown and clean up the lawns in all of these overproced neighbors in which ppl don't bother to do anything to their lawns it seems. He would have a heart attack if he saw the leaves in yards intown!

Well, that would just continue to enable his strange addiction to leaf blowing... going cold turkey could be the only lasting remedy, which is fortunate since Thanksgiving isn't that far off!

It used to be that a man took pride in the little plot he carved out of the wilderness for his family.

Apparently you will now be sent to jail for it.

How often is "several times a week" and for how long every time I wonder. Couldn't be that long. He's got woods and a pool too taking up a lot of his property.

I think if he got it down those 5 points to be in line with normal human conversation....or 9 db lower to get it in line with a phone ringing, he should be okay. And stuck to half an hour a day at the most.

This could be a great story. Say he got it to the same decibels of a phone ring and still goes to jail. Wonder what would happen to all the phones ringing on the streets, movies, restaurants, etc. If Johns Creek could one day require no cell phone rings. That could go national.

I say phone decibel level at least, better lawyer and he could have a good case in court. Give the story a headline "Is your cell phone at risk for use in public" or something.

Back to the story at hand. He was okay with the HOA. It was Johns Creek's very ambiquous law that left it up to individual prejudice.

A friend told me how absolutely gorgeous the community is. He said on this guy's street there are at least 60% over 65, likely more. And at least 85% over 50. It could be more too. Naps, someone suggested. Yeah, I feel one coming on myself.

Noise pollution destroys the quality of life. Period. Some noise is inevitable, of course. But much of it is not. Some municipalities get that and ban the actions of the noise for the hell of it crowd. Others should do the same thing.

Leaf blowers are outright banned in some cities, while others have sharp restrictions on their use. In my mind, that is progress.

BTW, I have two leaf blowers, one electric, one gas, although I rarely use either of them. When I do, it is for things like blowing the leaves out of the gutter. Any leaves that land on my grass can stay there.

For the poster that said leaf blowers aren't noisy enough to require ear protection, you are wrong. Hearing damage occurs two ways, extremely loud sounds in close proximity to the ear, which can cause immediate damage, and long term exposure to loud noise, which causes hearing to degrade over time. You may not notice anything right now using your leaf blower, but in the long run it is bad for your hearing.

Though a little expensive for the good ones, they make electric ones now that are just as powerful as the noisy gas powered ones.

I think what you have to understand here is context.

The reporter measured the decibels at a distance the neighbors would be and determined it to be around the same as a normal conversation. That's not the same as a normal conversation 100 yards away, it's the same as a normal conversation right next to your ear.

So imagine trying to watch TV, talk on the phone, sleep, pretty much DO ANYTHING if there is a normal human conversation happening right next to you. You can't, it's distracting.

That's the context here. The leaf blower obviously isn't the same loudness as a normal conversation. It's equal to a normal conversation at the distance you are away from it. You wouldn't sleep, work, cook, or do laundry with a bunch of people yammering in your ear, so why should you have to do it with a leaf blower pounding away that is equal to that same volume?

I've made my judgment: this guy is a tool. Any normal person would have just said, "Sorry, I'll try to limit my use of the leaf blower or buy a quieter one."

I was about to bring up this very point. The guy brought up phones. Imagine if you could hear everyone's phone from 100 yards away. Think of how aggravating that would be all the time. If they could get a leaf blower down to the ringer volume of an iPhone, that would be great, because then no one would ever hear it!
