I really haven't discerned much opposition to annexation from the city council based on the inevitable change in racial dynamic. I think the last two mayoral elections were evidence enough of that; crossover voting was unprecedented.

I agree, it seems like the CoA is welcoming new areas with open arms.

Today is the day. Have any of you voted? It'll be interesting to see what kind of turnout this election gets.

Does LaVista have any Spanish heritage behind it, or is it just a corny name?

Corny name. Originally it was two separate proposals (Lakeside and Briarcliff).

The CDC, Emory University, The Fernbank Museums, are the real jewels for the city here--and there is no way the Mayor is going to let an opportunity to gobble them up go. (And, there is probably an argument to be made for Druid Hills Country Club, and a net gain of empty student desks in the areas where they are needed.)

Not really because those same individuals you think would be against it aren't...they aware that Atlanta will have a balanced if both Druid Hills (along with Emory University, CDC, etc.) on the east side and Sandtown on the west side annexations go through. Atlanta will likely wind up as a pluralistic majority black city (meaning blacks will still take up the largest single demographic group by percentage but likely not over 50%) in the long run. The mayor and council knows this and still wants to annex those areas mentioned in Dekalb as a balance.

No. The original name came from the (now quite affluent) postwar development called LaVista Park. The extention of Lindbergh Drive was named this as well...and so it goes.

*Now* they present annexation to COA as an *option*.
Decaturish reports that some of the LH folks felt that their cause needed a boogeyman to scare seniors to vote for them, so they drafted Mayor Reed.

A little sleazy, but typical election stuff.
