Atlwarrior, I don't think the study's authors were attempting to state otherwise. They were simply pointing out what cities / areas have the better universities. I would agree with you that a superior education does not always equate to success, and I agree with you that without a superior education some folks nonetheless are wildly successful. But, for the most part, a great education can sure help you get a foot up on the next.

This is an overly broad statement. Maybe it's applicable if you're trying to become a tradesman, not so much if you want to be, say, an archaeologist or physician.

Maybe it's not so much the education as it is the gathering of minds.

That's exactly why certain universities are more prestigious than others. You can learn the exact same content these universities teach online or in books, but it's the connections and dense gathering of high intelligence that truly makes these universities elite. Atlanta is very lucky to have 2 top 100 universities, both within the city limits.

World class universities like Ga Tech and Emory is one of the secrets to Atlanta long term success and growth. And UGA is only an hour away.

Most of the major Sun Belt cities do not have 1 or 2 global, highly selective colleges that bring in tens of thousands fresh minds from around the world yearly.

Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, Birmingham have more regional universities in the city proper, like UAB, UCF, USF, UNF, and UNC-Charlotte.

Nashville has Vanderbilt, Austin has U of Texas, and Raleigh has Duke, Wake Forest, and UNC. And guess which southern cities have higher growth rates.

And Atlanta has a strong concentration of high quality black colleges like Morehouse and Spelman, which created a strong black middle class by bringing highly educated blacks from across to country for over 125 years.

A lot of people don't realize just how many colleges there are in Atlanta. There aren't many cities with as many quality schools as we have, even the ones that aren't the most elite. Emory, GA Tech, GA State, SCAD Midtown, Oglethorpe, Morehouse, Spelman and Clark Atlanta. There are also good close by schools like UGA, Mercer, Kennesaw, West Georgia, Clayton State, and probably others I can't even think of right now but you get the point.

I'm going to miss this city though. Will be going to NU next year.

BTW, Northwestern > UChicago
