What is the thinking on encouraging more scooter use as an element of our transportation strategy?

I can see some positives. They are small and not much larger than bicycles. They don't need special lanes. They are faster than bikes and won't slow down traffic on intown streets. They are very economical to operate and environmentally friendly compared to cars. Since they are powered it's easier to carry loads and go up hills. That also makes them more accessible to seniors.

Are there any downsides to incentivizing scooters?

I'm not really anti-scooter, but the big problem I see is we'd probably see more traumatic accidents if use increased w/o creating scooter friendly facilities... which there is very limited space for.

It could work very well within some neighborhoods, but I can see it being problematic along larger arteries and inside the major activity centers.

That is possible, sedimenjerry.

But seriously, if bikes will help the traffic problem, wouldn't scooters help even more?

They're faster, they don't need special lanes and they are accessible to more people.

I re-read this, do you mean like mo-peds? At first I thought you were talking about those small kid's scooters or those little hoverboards!

Mopeds are cool but I was thinking of something more like this.

Atlanta Motor Scooters | Scooters Atlanta GA | Scooters Decatur GA | Electric Bicycles | Mopeds

Obviously you have to ride scooters in appropriate places. It would be ridiculous (and illegal if I'm not mistaken) to take one out on a highway or a high speed road.

But for buzzing around city streets it's hard to see how they'd be any more dangerous than bicycles.

They are cute, but how do you keep them from getting stolen?
