“Atlanta's startup scene owes a great deal of its success to Mayor Kasim Reed," DataFox said in its ranking explanation. "He recruited economic development veterans to build out the Invest Atlanta staff, deepened ties to nearby Georgia Tech, and hosted Govathon, a city-wide hackathon focused on civic projects. Through networking, strategic partnerships and staying involved with startups, Reed has put Atlanta on the early-stage map."
In 2012, Invest Atlanta, the city’s economic development agency, launched “Start Up Atlanta” to help increase entrepreneurship.
The program includes “a web-based platform that visually maps out valuable resources such as incubators, accelerators, service providers and connections to create and support a network for entrepreneurs to succeed in launching a startup or building a business in Atlanta,” Invest Atlanta reported.
The DataFox said the Big Peach "came fast and furious onto the startup scene." In addition to Georgia Tech, Atlanta has several hubs for entrepreneurs like "Switchyards, which focuses on B2C companies; Tech Square Labs, which emphasizes technical founders; and the more general Atlanta Tech Village."

"Atlanta makes our list primarily because its early-stage companies show strong growth, and because it's more affordable than many other startup centers," it said. "With a focus on scaling and low cost of living, Atlanta is the perfect place to grow a company from one employee to 100."
