A longstanding Atlanta nightlife destination could soon fall to a mixed-use development anchored by student dorms. Creative Loafing reports the nondescript block of former low-rise offices between 714 and 728 Spring St. NW — next to the Arby's that became Starbucks — has been purchased by developers who plan to build 300 dorms with street-level retail space soon. Should the project move forward, it won't be far from the planned next phase of Tech Square, a Portman Holdings undertaking, plus two recently opened high-rises for students on Spring Street and some 50 other projects across Midtown.

CL posits that the closure of venues currently occupying the complex — Quad, Spring4th and Legacy — will end an EDM era in Midtown. The venues have a rabid following but have been plagued by shootings in recent years and a reputation as a drug den, as chronicled by National Geographic's TV show "Drugs, Inc." Faced with Midtown's development wave, owners say that Quad and the rest of Spring4th Complex will be headed for a new frontier — an unspecified location south of Interstate 20.

Sure, but what's wrong with that massive parking lot one block away?

Interesting, can you elaborate? Do they own both parking lots?

I know they own the majority if not all of the parcels across from the AT&T tower (the Catholic school there used to be their headquarters).
