Yes. Cigarette smoke tends to drift into neighboring units through ventilation shafts, etc.
I used to have a neighbor who smoked, and burned candles to cover the smell (which does not work!!!). The odor would seep into my place and wake me up in the middle of the night.
It's a nasty smell and I do not understand why people want to smoke and smell that bad.

I find it pretty abhorrent that someone would move into a smoke-free building and smoke in it anyway. When we (aforementioned roommate and I) would move into a new hotel room (we were on an entertainment tour), we wouldn't even accept a smoking room, because we didn't want to smell smoke. And if we got a non-smoking room which someone had obviously smoked in, we would ask for another room.
Getting a non-smoking hotel room that reeks of stale cigarette smoke is just terrible.

A lot of smokers just don't realize how bad it smells and how often the smell occurs. They're used to it.

Good point, and what sedimenjerry said, too. The smell of cigarette smoke drifts all over the place and it is very hard to get rid of.

I smoked when I was younger but quit 35 years ago. Until you get off the weeds you don't realize how you are stinking things up.

I assume neighbors of smokers are snitching to management. Every week management sends mass emails reminding residents of the no smoking policy. Management isn't playing. Next week they will begin eviction proceedings.

I had a similar problem in a previous property. My neighbor smoked weed and burned incense to cover the smell. It was horrible!

If they initialed that codicil in the lease, it was explained to them. No excuse.

Yes, l do need to ask. I'm not obtuse, yet l find such a statement rather vague and passive-aggressive. So indulge me and clarify it.
