I'm a resident at a Camden property in Buckhead that has a no smoking policy. The policy prohibits smoking anywhere on the property, including in the privacy of our apartments. Guests can't smoke either.

The manager recently sent emails to every resident announcing final warnings before she begins eviction proceedings against smokers.

Apparently smoking is an ongoing issue on the property despite residents signing the no smoking clause in the lease when they moved in.

Would you move to a smoke-free apartment community?

I would. No more crushed butts on my property.

Absolutely, that sounds amazing. In fact, I may look for these types of places in the future. Smoking has even caused fires so I'd feel a little safer.

I don't understand why a non-smoker would not.

I guess I don't understand why smokers sign leases agreeing to live in a non-smoking environment. Then they light up as soon as they are settled in.

I smoked for many years, and still occasionally do. I'd probably have no issue moving to a smoke-free building. Even when I was a smoker, and roomed with another smoker, we never smoked inside. Even though the smell of smoke doesn't really bother me, and sometimes is actually enjoyable, it's not something I want to smell on a regular basis.

I find it pretty abhorrent that someone would move into a smoke-free building and smoke in it anyway. When we (aforementioned roommate and I) would move into a new hotel room (we were on an entertainment tour), we wouldn't even accept a smoking room, because we didn't want to smell smoke. And if we got a non-smoking room which someone had obviously smoked in, we would ask for another room.

I'm guessing cigarettes aren't the issue

My mother smokes and my parents visit a few times during the year. She definitely does not go outside or elsewhere to do it nor would I ask her to. So, yes I would sign a lease that asked banned it and just basically ignore that stipulation. I would just air it out, go buy some smoke eliminator spay or something from Lowe's, and worry about the rest later. I would feel like as long as I was paying rent on time, she didn't set the place on fire, and she did not smoke in a neighbor's apartment then stay out of it. I will resolve what if anything needs to be resolved at the end of the lease.

Now, it could be a thing that smokers sign up for a lease at a non-smoking apartment because they did not take the time to read the lease. After you get to initialing about 25 pages in, I think almost everybody stops reading the exact content.
