My friend is dragging me to Lawrenceville, GA the weekend after the 4th of July. I'm told it's within 1/2 hour from Atlanta. Is there anything in Lawrenceville worth seeing. What must I see / do in Atlanta? I suspect most of the time I'll be by myself. I'm a 32 year old single woman.

Not that much compared to Atlanta. It's a little over half an hour provided there's no traffic. The downtown area has some interesting shops and bars/restaurants.

Welcome.

Lawrenceville, the second oldest city in Metro Atlanta, offers a revitalized downtown district with crepe myrtle trees adorning the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse. That courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Gwinnett Historical Society, Gwinnett Memorial Museum and Veterans Memorial Museum, but it also hosts a variety of other community events. In fact, a free concert may be going on there during your visit featuring a local band. The Aurora Theatre just down the street may be putting on a Broadway play, musical or comedy show during that time.

The Gwinnett Braves MLB play just outside of Lawrenceville in their state of the art baseball stadium.

The largest shopping mall in Georgia, Mall of Georgia, is just a short drive away just outside of Buford. It too hosts several free outdoor events, movies and more. As a Simon Property, it follows the blueprint for big malls with plenty of dining, fitness, shopping and more. In fact, you will have just missed the fireworks on the fourth of July.

Then there's Suwanee, also just a short drive away, where you can find several outdoor community events much like the ones in Downtown Lawrenceville. Marathons, beer fests, farmer's markets, free concerts, free movies and more all within reach of Lawrenceville.

Don't forget about Lake Lanier Islands Resort still just a few minutes drive away.

Sure, Lawrenceville is convenient to Atlanta. But please keep an open mind about Gwinnett County too.

In addition to the places that AtlantaMove described, historic Downtown Duluth has many social and entertainment events and is only a few minutes away from the Lawrenceville area.

Stone Mountain, which is a large granite cropping (rock) that rises nearly 1,700 feet out of relatively level surrounding terrain, is probably the biggest tourist attraction nearby about 30 minutes or so away from the Lawrenceville area.

Of course, Atlanta is only about 30 minutes away and has plenty of options for tourist attractions, shopping, major events and festivals.

Glad to hear the Braves are nearby. I'll definitely be attending a game. If I still have any money left I'd love to go shopping. I'll only be there the weekend so I still want to squeeze in some Atlanta. Like the aquarium and the civil rights museums. Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Be careful to differentiate between the two Braves' teams.

The minor-league baseball Gwinnett Braves (the Triple-A farm team of the Atlanta Braves) play at Coolray Stadium nearby in Lawrenceville.

The Major League Baseball Atlanta Braves (or what is left of them) play at Turner Field just south of Downtown Atlanta (for the time being).
