Nathan Deal’s forceful opposition to Georgia ‘religious liberty’ bill | Political Insider blog

Quote:
In stark terms, the Republican said he would reject any measure that “allows discrimination in our state in order to protect people of faith,” and urged religious conservatives not to feel threatened by the ruling. He also called on his fellow Republicans pushing for the measure to take a deep breath and ” recognize that the world is changing around us.”
Good Deal!

That time has come that I can FINALLY say, great job Governor Deal! While I would like religion to be out of government completely, I'm really glad to see the Governor using it to at least put those nutbags back in their place. He actually made sense - I might not agree with what you are doing, but who am I, as the government, to tell you not to do it when it isn't harming anybody else?

Why is he using the bully pulpit?

All he has to do is veto it.

Trying to use reason to change some people's minds is not a bad thing.

He's giving those who sponsored the bill a chance to save face and just ship since he's made it clear he WILL veto it.

After some of the despicable ads he had regarding "the gay agenda" during his campaign, I'm mightily impressed. Maybe he's done some soul-searching.

It's not at that stage yet. Only the Senate has passed the Bill so far. The House still has it in committee. I guess this is a preemptive strike to let them know that this thing better not end up on his desk.

Because once the house and senate have both passed it, a fair amount of irrevocable damage has been done. It's in the governor's, and all of our, interests to have the legislature do their job and moderate the extreme influences within that body.
