I have been trying to figure out what the airport has to do with who drops me off or picks me up if they are not going to pitch in on the gas or fare.

So it appears they don't want Uber parking in the cell lot for free when taxis and limos have to pay to use it. That's a fair request.

The other thing seems to be they want Uber to pay to be able to pick up and drop off at some terminals - think it was A and B. That does not seem fair at all.

I use the SkyTrain over to the GICC, get off there, request a Uber from there get a pickup in less then a minute. (Also alot easier to find your driver there then at the terminal curb).

Lots of the Uber Drivers hang out in the GICC parking lot to do pickup from the SkyTrain stop, after they do a drop off @ the airport.

The Airport wants Uber to Pay (and get background checked like the all the Atlanta Cab Drivers), to do pickups. They would have to do two queues in the Cab Holding Areas, one for Cabs, one for Ubers (but that could be done very easily)

There's no issue over whether they can drop you off; that's allowed already. It's pick-ups that are being disputed. You can already request an Uber, legally, if you use Uber Black. Those drivers are commercially licensed and have permission to pick up at the airport already.

The quote from the Uber driver in that article who says "it's a matter of safety" that she only works in Buckhead, Midtown, and at the airport—that's just blatantly racist.

Uber has a really bad reputation for being arrogant and obstinate when it negotiates with cities. I'm not surprised to learn they're not making friends in Atlanta. They also have a mixed record when ensuring the safety of its customers from crimes committed by their drivers. That's part of why I only use Uber Black; I don't really trust Uber's background checks enough to jump in the car with any random guy.

Got an Uber X from the Airport last night, didn't even know of the issues above.

$11.50 to Old 4th Ward....same ride would have been $35 in a taxi

Yep and most passengers still don't tip the driver.

Not true I live in West End and drive Uber. Not only does a lot of college students in SW Atlanta use Uber, but if a request is 15 mins away. It would be stupid to take that request for a $5 ride and usually no tip.

Starting January 1st, Uber and other ridesharing companies will legally be able to pick up at HJIA.
Quote:
Under the new system to take effect Jan. 1, 2017, the airport will charge a $1.50 fee per ride for pickups at the airport by ride-share services — the same fee paid by taxis.

However, companies like Uber and Lyft that use private background checks will also be subject to an additional per-ride security surcharge of $2.35 per ride, making it a total of a $3.85 surcharge per passenger.

Each ride-share company will also pay an annual permit fee of $50 per vehicle, up to $100,000 per year.

The airport also plans to set up a ride-share assembly area, and drivers will not be allowed to wait in the cell phone lot.
