Development and transportation are related. In Midtown the transportation has to include MARTA, which is capable of carrying large amounts of commuters.

There was even a National Geographic article on how dramatically the NYC skyline is changing. It was unreal.

Well everybody was doing it in the 70s and 80s, but around 1992 everybody but NYC stopped. It appears from this thread that they are starting again after a 25 year hiatus.

Very few places have the land values to warrant such tall developments.

Yeah, that's a good point. The Hudson Yards project in NYC for example, is being built on top of an active rail yard. Imagine the construction logistics! The project website is pretty fascinating The Master Plan - 17 Million Square Foot Mixed Use Development | Hudson Yards

I'd argue the infill that took place during those 25 years was equally as important and needed to happen before we could build any more of the 800 footers. So it's not like we were stagnant during those 25 years. We just needed to shift things up for a couple of cycles, unlike NYC, which already had a massive population living among the skyscrapers of Manhattan. Midtown would have been a boring place if we only focused on towering office buildings.

Like the recent discussion about vandals in a Fayette County cemetery destroying headstones with dates as early as 1755? Yep, MARTA got brought up there too.

Wow! Hopefully, these will start soon. Presumably, the towers will be built one at a time and not all three simultaneously.
