Has anyone else noticed what seems to be an overabundance of deer in Buckhead lately? I've come across them several times in the past few weeks standing in or crossing Habersham and wandering up Old Ivy. It's no surprise that they're around, of course. It's just the first time that I've seen so many of them and they don't seem to be afraid of the traffic. Be careful driving!

I've seen them over there more than a few times too. I think they live in that little patch of woods on the NE corner of Habersham and W Wesley. Or they could just be following the creeks in the area. Saw a coyote or a fox in the middle of W Wesley late one night driving west about a block from Morris Brandon a while back. It was chowing down on some road kill and didn't even notice me until I got right up on it. Must have scared it cuz it jumped straight up in the air like a cat. It got so much air time it probably could've jumped over my car. I was just as surprised as he was. I think animals have adapted to live around us and they're not phased by cars and people anymore. My neighbor is a big time hunter and he was telling me that when he goes out west to hunt, the grizzly bears will just follow hunters around. They will just wait until they hear a gun go off and then slide in and steal the hunters kill. They have learned that when they see humans in bright orange vests carrying sticks that's it basically a free meal for them if they just sit back in the cut and wait. I think it's pretty interesting actually.

One reason why there may be so many deer out and about could probably be because this is deer mating season.

Georgia (like many other states) has a raging deer overpopulation problem....A deer overpopulation problem made worse by a mild climate and an abundance of vegetation in the Southeastern U.S. and a surprising severe lack of hunters available to control the deer population.

So when the already out-of-control deer population becomes much more active during deer mating season (which is often during the months of October and November), it is going to be very noticeable.

That is excellent advice to warn motorists to be careful and to stay alert and on the lookout for deer.

I can attest to the dangers that deer can pose during this and any other time of year. That's because I had my own unfortunate encounter with a herd of deer during darkness hours about eight years ago on a two-lane segment of Georgia Highway 20 in Henry County.

I was driving about 55 mph on GA 20 between McDonough and Conyers about just after midnight and came upon a deer standing in the middle of my side of the road.

I saw the deer, swerved across the double-yellow line to go around the deer standing directly in the middle of my lane and clipped a second deer that I did not and could not see in the dark. Took off my driver's side mirror and left a couple of dents behind my rear driver's side door and on the driver's side of my rear bumper.

They eat my daisies and hostas with a zeal I have never seen. In the process this summer, they managed to trample my vinca. Those darn varmints need to stay at home in the woods! Oh, I forgot - their woods are being over run by new subdivisions and an expanding city and they are being forced from their natural habitats. The great urbanization of the creatures is really a sad shame.

That's funny you mention this, I have seen them recently while driving around by Mt. Paran area near Chastain park, of course that's pretty woodsy so makes sense, but man they do just pop out and chill! I've even stopped and whistled and they just sit there and eat grass or hangout lol.
