There are some amazing neighborhoods tucked away in both Brookhaven and Buckhead that even the average Atlanta resident does not realize they exist.

In your year of exploration you will have a chance to check out many of them so that is a great option.

Anywhere along GA 400 will work. If it were me then I would look at Lindbergh, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs or Dunwoody.

The main issue is that as far as commuter traffic is concerned, Alpharetta is a far flung exurb.
Commuting from town to Alpharetta will be more difficult in the afternoons than mornings. I almost always find 400 congested coming in during the afternoons, but in the morning, once you get past Buckhead, you usually don't have problems outbound barring the occasional accident. From Lindberg to Buckhead is unpredictable (except that it is torture getting to the 400 entrance ramp!). It may be very slow, it may flow the speed limit and I've never seen any predictable pattern.

In my experience, "rush hour" can easily extend until 7. I live about 6 miles from work. I am often in stop and go traffic as I leave work and try to get to the doggie daycare by 7. I travel from the Cumberland area to Vinings (S Atlanta Rd) on 285. I have also had the misfortune of trying to meet friends at the Perimeter (400/285) or in Kennesaw (up 75) for 7:00 or 7:30 and it can still be pretyy bad although granted not as bad as 4, 5, or 6.
