Get your history correct. It was the "non-black people" that white-flighted out of the area that caused any lack of diversity in the first place.

It amazes me that there are still people out there that see all-black areas and think that is due to a notion of black people not wanting diversity. As if.

Good point, you are right about that!

Are there any areas of Atlanta that are majority black today that have always been that way? I really don't know if East Atlanta ever had white people that fled in the 60s or 70s or whenever, but I'm kind of curious as to whether there are any areas that have just always been black enclaves.

Reality: Atlanta's diversity should be celebrated not segregated.
Diversity, not perpetual criminal activity. You do realize that you can have one without the other.

root out the unwanted elements? What's your definition of unwanted?

Poor, and everything that comes as part of that.

Instead of pricing people out of their homes, we should be working to elliminate their poverty, and the symptoms that come from it. That means jobs, education, health services, etc.

After the Civil War in Atlanta, blacks were only concentrated in a few neighborhoods immediately around Downtown--and many (if not most) were still racially mixed. Later, blacks started stretching to eastern parts of Old Fourth Ward. After WWII, blacks started stretching to neighborhoods to the west and to the south.

White flight in Atlanta began in the late 50s and into the 60s and 70s.

Off the top of my head--always black enclaves (after Civil War/Reconstruction)

Buttermilk Bottom?
Sweet Auburn?
South Atlanta?
Reynoldstown?
Summerhill (Jewish and Black)
Mechanicsville?
Vine City?
Peoplestown?
Pittsburgh?
A few other neighborhoods just to the west of Downtown

*some (if not most) of the neighborhoods above were probably racially-mixed initially

Remember, "black enclaves" were due to Jim Crow, de jure segregation, etc. Not some notion of black exclusivity.

ATLTJL,

You need to read this book:

Kruse, K.M.: White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism. (eBook and Paperback)

Buy it tomorrow! You won't regret it.

Again, I won't apology for having common sense.

Visit east atlanta enough and you will see. I go to that part every weekend and know others that live around there and they have to deal with these day time break ins, armed robberies, and more. Its a small minority committing these crimes but enough to make it annoying and wish they would move out.

Living around loud and vulgar teen with saggin pants, gangs, drugs, etc gets really old really quick when you just want some peace and quiet. Even alot of churches deal with constant car break in on Sundays during service around there.
