Hi there.

I'm a 35 years old male from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
My background is Janitorial Services Management. I've worked in medical facilities and commercial facilities as a contractor and as a direct hire.

I can't find anything. I've had a few phone interviews over the last year but nothing yet. I even tell them in my cover letter that I do not need a relocation package and relocating will be a smooth transition. Do you think it's because I have the Ann Arbor address on my resume?

Thank you for any responses-
D.S. (GoBlue1981)

I doubt your address has anything to with gaining employment. Is the job market over-saturated with janitorial labor?

Do you have any skills, trades, and interests beyond janitorial services?

Don't know about medical facilities, but every office I have worked in seems to use a janitorial service, not direct hires. Have you figured out who the big players are in supplying these services in Atlanta and reached out to them? Also, for smaller offices, it seems many cleaners pound the pavement and just knock on doors offering their services to nearby offices they think may need them. Can you also do residential? There are plenty of maid services around town you could try.

You're not alone in having trouble finding work. A lot of people are moving to Georgia. I think that this sucks up any new job the metro area creates. I would try indeed.com. Have you tried applying to any schools and universities especially? I hear universities have nice benefits.

Like everywhere else but maybe even more so in Georgia, it's all about who you know. I have heard so many times "I got this job from a friend of mine" or "I got this job from someone I know." Good luck!

But please don't give up if you really want to move down here. The population is expanding and so this means there will be more medical facilities, more schools, etc.

I don't think that your address is the sole reason, but it is probably a contributing factor. Jobs here getting a ton of applicants and companies use anything they can to weed people out.

If you are getting phone interviews, then that at least means that your resume in and of itself is generating interest. The roadblock may be that although you say that relocating on your own dime is not an issue, the recruiters are probably under the gun in get phone interviewees in for in-person interviews as soon as possible. Typically, that would mean if you pass the phone screen, they would want you to interview with someone in person probably within a week or so of that. If you can't get in for an interview in that period or you have to push things out due to currently being out-of-state, that unfortunately means that they will just call the next person on their list. It is not totally fair, but it is a by-product of trying to find a job while still being elsewhere.

Personally, I would suggest using a local address on your resume if possible. I would also suggest leaving any language pertaining to relocation out of the cover letter. Keep all of that on a "need to know" basis at this time. Once you receive an actual offer, you can easily state that you can start on a certain date (1-3 weeks after the offer, ideally) and then use that time to make your "smooth transition" to Georgia. I don't know your financial situation, but this would also involve getting to-and-from Georgia for the in-person interview.
