There's good news and bad news: the owner of the complex that includes Whole Foods, Pet Smart, and smaller shops is exploring ways for people to get from the Eastside Trail to the center without sidestepping down steep hills or taking roundabout walks. And he wants to improve vehicular access. The bad news: options are limited.

Under the agreement, Sembler agreed that no vehicular access would be permitted between Midtown Place and Midtown Promenade. The deal also prohibited connections to and from the shopping center from nearby communities, a move to prevent the quiet historic neighborhoods from being overrun with cars. The agreement encourages pedestrian access between the two shopping centers. And, it's worth noting, that the Connect Atlanta plan calls for one day connecting Ponce and Monroe Drive via 8th Street.
This is the big part right here. Connecting the two properties, and then 8th street would help a LOT. Speed-bumps could help keep through-traffic safe, and the neighborhood streets could be closed to through traffic if they needed. Really, though, there needs to be a better grid in place in the area, and busting the super-block would help with that.

8th already has speedbumps; When they talk about connecting 8th to Ponce they mean converting the through access to the Trader Joes development so that it is more like a street and curves around and runs through Midtown Place in some form or fashion to dead end into Ponce. I'd say strong NO to closing off streets. This isn't the suburbs; What got us into this traffic mess in the first place was NIMBY's like SHAPE that demanded public roads be converted into private drives for the enjoyment of a handful of SFHs.

If you want to have an experience akin to living in the suburbs then don't move into the core of the city minutes from the most urban parts and throw a tantrum until you get private roads that the property taxes of those houses on the street surely are not paying enough to fully cover even if you diverted all the property tax to the road's maintenance.

My mistake was, for some reason, thinking that 8th was a mid-block street, basically where Glenwood is. Bringing 8th around like you suggest would be a good 1st step, but I was mostly talking about Glenwood needing to also be connected. Maybe even bringing St. Charles down to tie in as well.

You've got 37,000 vehicles a day on Ponce in that area. That's several times the number of cars that will be heading to Suntrust Field on game days.

If you start opening up the neighborhoods to more cut through traffic you are going to have some very unhappy taxpayers.

Well, my point is that there's a tremendous amount of vehicle traffic in that area -- 37,000 vehicles a day on Ponce alone. That's several times the number of cars that will be coming to Suntrust field on game days.

So if you start opening up the neighborhoods to more cut through traffic you are liable to have some unhappy taxpayers.

Another example of how the effects of bad development can last for decades.
