To me most of Dekalb seems quintessentially Atlanta because the city limit boundaries abruptly stopping at the county line seems illogical to me.

I think I've just lived here too long. We took the grandkids out to Fernbank the other day and I thought, "Ah, good old DeKalb. It still looks great and feels solid out here."

I know that's purely subjective on my part but it's just been that way for so long, since the beginning, really.

Understandable, but Georgia annexation laws just plain stupid. I've seen better annexation laws written in my home state of Alabama.

That's because it was changed to explicitly to restrict Atlanta's ability to annex white-majority areas.

I have zero problems with people not wanting to be forcibly annexed, but if an unincorporated area wants to be annexed by a city, they should have that ability.

Exactly.

Oh I have noticed this. It's funny historically Birmingham does the same thing in Alabama can have gotten away with it. Hence it's funny looking city boundaries. Atlanta did it twice in the 20th Century legislatively and now the annexation laws basically restrict it to the boot-like shape. It presently has Dekalb County line as the stopping point to the east.

Well, I would confer that you should have a problem with the municipalization of unincorporated areas. It's better to be annexed by an existing functioning municipality than forced into a "new jurisdiction" that outsources everything except zoning and maybe police and/or fire.

I think the law still permits annexation, it just has to be done with the consent of those being annexed (the recent annexations of East Lake GC and Edmund Park in DeKalb being examples).
