More than likely, Clarkesville will be perfectly safe even if what's left of the hurricane passes straight over. There might be a lot of rain and some wind, but you're not going to see anything remotely close to what you would see out on the coast.

Anyway...it depends on where in Missouri you are going. Coming down 85, across 20 to Birmingham, 22 to Memphis, and either 55 or state highways is a good way to southern Missouri. Otherwise, you'll probably want to come across to 75 then over 24. I don't recall anything particularly steep along these routes.

Yea, Clarksville will be fine. If they can fine a place to stay no need to go any farther.

Stay in Clarkesville, there's no way it will be anything close to dangerous by the time is reaches it...especially given how its such a slow moving system.

Except for Monteagle Pass.

Not sure what you might consider "not really steep". 5% might not be the steepest east of the Mississippi, but let's not pretend its not a white-knuckle ride down the west-side of the mountain [btw, last I knew, it was only 2 lanes down that side]. Eastbound is even worse [though, as you said, at least its 3 lanes]. Hell, Johnny Cash wrote a song about how treacherous it is.

If the OP is even mentioning steep hills as a concern, Monteagle Pass bears mentioning.

All of that said, I would definitely agree that Clarksville is in no serious danger from this slow-moving storm, and that there's no real reason to evacuate away from there.

Meh, it never really scared me much. Its a graded fairly well - the only time it gets slightly worrisome is if you're on the side of a truck or if you're infront of one that loses his brakes....or if it ices.

I just downshift, never have to hit the brakes and coast in gear while maintaining around 65 MPH. If I start coming up on someone, downshift again - engine braking helps alot. What does worry me alittle though is drivers do drive a bit too fast going through that area. some doing 70+ MPH.

We need to take you to Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, So.Cal, Oregon, Washington state, W.Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York state. Some of those places have much more dramatic curves and grades over much longer distances.

That Interstate between Chattanooga and the western (northern) end of Monteagle is by far the most scenic freeway in the Southeast.

I also get fascinated by how I-24 dips into Georgia for a few miles while retaining its Tennessee exit numbers. I am wondering how that was coordinated between TDOT and GDOT during its construction...
