Most schools experienced improved performance on the 2016 ACT in Clayton County Public Schools, compared to 2015 results.

The Georgia Department of Education released the 2016 results, noting the state outperformed the national average in composite scores.

Eight of the 11 regular education and magnet programs in Clayton County saw marked increases year-to-year on the college entrance exam, according to the department’s results.

While the district’s Riverdale, Morrow and Mount Zion high schools experienced little or no gains, a few schools reported remarkable gains over the past year.

This year’s cohort at Mundy’s Mill High bested the 2015 class of test-takers by 0.7 points, pulling a 17.4 average score compared to 16.7 in 2015, according to state data. The highest score possible on the ACT is 36.

Elite Scholars Academy and Martha Ellen Stilwell School of the Arts broke the 20-point mark this year, averaging 20.9 and 20.2 respectively. Martha Ellen Stilwell rose from 19.8, while Elite Scholars bounced from its 19.5 average 2015 ACT composite score.

Georgia’s average composite score of 21.1 was higher, for the first time in state history, than the national average of 20.8. Officials reported that the state outperformed the nation in English, reading and science, and scored the same as the national average in mathematics.

The number of Clayton County students taking the ACT in 2016 varied from school to school, with fewer than 100 students taking the college entrance exam at one school and nearly 200 at another.

The following are school-level ACT composite average scores compared from 2015 to 2016.

High School 2016 | 2015

Charles Drew High 18.1 | 17.2

Elite Scholars Academy 20.9 | 19.5

Forest Park High 18 | 18.6

Jonesboro High 18.1 | 17.8

Lovejoy High 18.3 | 17.9

Martha Ellen Stilwell 20.2 | 18.8

Morrow High 17.1 | 17

Mount Zion High 17.1 | 17.2

Mundy’s Mill High 17.4 | 16.7

North Clayton High 17.7 | 17.3

Riverdale High 17.6 | 17.9

Forest Park in particular has really become the best school in Clayton imo. It's smartest students can compete with any student in the North metro.

I kind of felt that way when I entered college way back in the Fall of 1993. Many of my classmates were from North Fulton and East Cobb, but I felt WAY better prepared for school than they were. I performed better academically than they did, too. I know not many can say this, but my AP classes at Forest Park High were MUCH more difficult than ANY of my college classes and that includes my Masters level classes at University of Georgia which I completed in 2003. I know my Georgia Tech engineering friends shake their heads when I say this (I was a History Major) but for me, this was true.

Georgia's average is 21.1. Every school in Clayton came within two points and two schools exceeded the average. Clayton's title one schools did two points (on average) better than Fulton's title one schools. Check yourself troll. (and go FP Panthers)

I doubt some people have any idea what the ACT is or that these are actually good scores.

Good to see the scores are headed up in Clayton.

I just saw the scores were up in Fayette to an average of 23.6 with McIntosh and Starr's Mill leading the way with average scores over 25. Coweta was also up to an average score of 21.5. Good news for the southside.
