Based on the criteria I can't think of a place to recommend and I've been here over 20 years.

As far as jobs go, there are far nicer places to raise a child like Asheville, Chattanooga, or even Knoxville, that put you closer to "Dad" without having to resort to Atlanta's problems. For some Atlanta is an ok fit, but on that fixed of a budget, single, and with a kid, it's an uphill choice. The jobs are here, but there are surely job available in the other cities mentioned (all of which have better local economies than the Northern larger cities right now). No offense to Dad, but he chose to move here. You pick a place that's affordable and safe for you and your kid and let Dad drive to YOU to visit his son regularly.

Good luck in whatever choice you make.
You are very right! I have always made sure my son seen his father, but now its time for me to focus on what best for me and my kids. Thats why we are moving to Arizona instead. Thanks for the post and all the opinions!

I have skimmed through alot of posts, did the research on suggested school sites and housing areas and have come to the conclusion (correct me if I'm wrong) that all of the schools that are considered the "best" or "above average" are in very expensive/pricey neighborhoods. Now unless the average person can afford a 300k+ home where there are either upscale/ upper class blacks or predominently white schools and neighborhoods, where can I find a decent home, in a decent neighborhood with a good schools for the average middle class family? Or does my family have to be "well off" for my children to get a decent education? Looking to spend max of 180k and would prefer no more than 30-45 minutes out of Atlanta (will be working for Children's Hospital of Atlanta...Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! And I apologize in advance if I may have offended anyone

Go to an MLS search web site e.g. AtlantaMLS.com - A service of Georgia MLS select search by high school, enter Lassiter as the school name and your price range. Lassiter is a top-flight high school and the elementary and middle schools that feed it are all good.

I happen to live in the Lassiter area and work in Sandy Springs (commute down Johnson Ferry Rd - not perfect but not terrible either). I think other good East Cobb high schools such as Sprayberry might have housing to fit your budget also. Most of the people who post here seem to have more to spend on housing, I've noticed it too.

I belatedly realized that I took the above to mean Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (I expect I'm right about that) but also thought only of Children's at Scottish Rite, the hospital in Sandy Springs. CHOA has a couple of other hospitals in different parts of the city. bkmomof3, if you could specify which CHOA location you'll be working at, people would be able to offer better advice on where to look for housing. The area I suggested is OK for commuting to Scottish Rite, I think, but would be a much longer commute to Egleston or Hughes Spalding.

Exactly where will you be working in Metro Atlanta? This is very important. I (we) can help as soon as we know this information.
