In his latest weekly syndicated Capitol Impact column, veteran Georgia political reporter Tom Crawford cautions Georgia state legislators against following down neighboring North Carolina's path given the continuing massive economic and public relations (and possibly political) fallout that state continues to grapple with in the aftermath of the passage of its highly controversial anti-LGBTQ HB2 law.

Said Crawford:
Quote:
"Our neighbors to the north (in North Carolina) have shown that ideological purity comes with a high price tag. Are Georgia’s politicians really willing to wreck the state’s economy to please some religious conservatives? It could all come down to (Georgia Governor Nathan) Deal again and his willingness to use his veto pen."
The cost of the passage into law of the highly controversial House Bill 2 (the "Bathroom Bill") has been extremely high and extremely painful for the neighboring state of North Carolina.

Amongst the steep costs that North Carolina has paid has been:

> Cancellations of concerts in the state by major musical artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam (amongst others)...

> The halting of an office expansion in the state that would have employed 250 people by Deutsche Bank...

> The abandonment by PayPal of a 400-employee operation center in Charlotte...

> The cancellation of the 2017 NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte...

> The withdraw from the state of 7 scheduled athletic championship events by the NCAA (including the withdraw of NCAA men's basketball tournament games, something that is particularly painful for a college basketball-crazed state like North Carolina)...

> The withdraw from the state of all ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) championship competitions for the 2016-17 season (including the withdraw of the lucrative and very high-profile 2016 ACC Football Championship Game from Charlotte)...

(...The ACC's headquarters is located in Greensboro, North Carolina and there have been calls for the conference to move its headquarters out of the state if North Carolina Republicans continue their political, social and cultural standoff over the highly-controversial House Bill 2 a.k.a. "The Bathroom Bill".)

Good column by one of our best journalists. North Carolina used to be viewed as a progressive place but now they have egg on their face.

Let's not pat ourselves on the back. We were very close to going down that road.

We can't blame NC for what their governor did. The people don't support it. If the gov is thrown out in 7 weeks, NC will keep its title as second most progressive southern state after Virginia. If they keep him....yeah, I don't know. Atlanta is very progressive but it's Georgia's only progressive area, outweighed by rural areas everywhere else. Any state that Trump wins cannot be called "educated" or "progressive" by any stretch, so we will see what happens.

"Educated" and "progressive" are NOT mutually exclusive or mutually inclusive. Making them so is definitely a fallacy. I know many social conservatives, including myself, that have many advanced degrees.

Yep, we barely avoided the religious freedom bill nonsense during the last session. But at least our governor made a better decision.

Of course not, but they are correlated. Typically when people gain more education, they open their mind and realize how ignorant it is to try to suppress others to use specific bathrooms or marry only certain sexes when it doesn't affect them in the slightest. It is typically less educated people who cling to such bizarre prejudices, but obviously there are exceptions.

That's true, but generally increasing levels of education does correlate with increasing tolerance toward others.
