How about, keep the electoral college, but all of the electoral votes of a state have to be split out into geographic districts of roughly equal population.

So, Metro Atlanta could have given maybe 7 or 8 of GA's 16 electoral votes to Clinton, with the rest going to Trump.

If that were the system, election would have been a very very slight Clinton win, hopefully mirroring the popular vote.

Popular vote doesn't assuage fears of human lives being hurt. Besides, popular vote still counts at the state level.

you would be surprised. everyone would agree to blow themselves up if it were on the ballot. this election should have taught us that people will do anything when they're scared.

My comment wasn't so much about the manner of the vote, but just the election itself, regardless of how it is administered. I cannot be idly "interested" in the manner you suggested, given the consequences.

Last I saw, Mrs. Clinton was ahead in the popular vote by about 700,000. That's crazy.

That's only about 5/10ths of 1 percent.

But its kind of like a baseball team complaining because they had more hits but didn't win the game. Getting runs is the goal, not hits.

Sure small states get more play now with the EC, but if it were on population, it would probably make the primary process far more important, they need to be finding their constituencies in every state early to pull out the numbers more and really get a grassroots effort to win over every state's population with their people.

At the very least, it should go the way of NE and ME as said above.
That misses the point. Smaller states get more weight. It was part of the original setup so that large states didn't control everything.

Doing it by US representative district does mean that every state matters, not just the 10-12 closest ones. If you threw out one outlying poll in New Hampshire, the RealClear Politics poll average would have had it 270-268 Trump with that one Maine district being the difference. As it was, if Michigan and Pennsylvania had gone the other way, it would have been 270-268 Trump with that Maine district, again being the difference.

Larger states do control everything again if some won the 11 most states the other 39 wouldn't matter.

The Electoral College and winner take all, creates a situation of the red and Blue states, small states like washington and Arkansas will ignored oppose to campaigns going to all the states.
