This murder is a tragedy, no doubt, but it will get blown out of proportion because it happened on a MARTA vehicle. MARTA's reputation with some certainly isn't its reality. It's still a safe transit system.
Exactly.

What I would like done about it has nothing to do with MARTA, and I doubt many of those who are saying this is somehow indicative of the transit system would support it. That is, we, as a society, must be doing better at all stages to prevent and treat what leads to crime:
  • More education open to a wider range of people.
  • A better social safety net.
  • A stronger national health system, with plenty of options for mental treatment.
  • A judicial system tailored towards remediation for first / second / non-violent offenders.

Of course, that would require a lot of caring, as a society, to fund and see such things through.

And a judicial system that keeps repeat offenders behind bars instead of the revolving door policy Fulton is using right now. Even Mayor Reed has complained about it.

And passengers need to be aware of what can happen. Panhandlers are pretty regular on the train. Sometimes its the same person over and over.

Sure. No arguments from me. Give them the opportunity to genuinely change, but if they refuse, then they refuse.

Well, this certainly changes things....

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that it was Richey who was allegedly asked for money, according to warrants. A previous story said that Richey asked the victim for money before the attack.

This is tragic but it seems over-sensationalized to blame it on MARTA. I think the trains are safe.

Good job AJC, always rushing to print anything that makes MARTA look bad instead of using good journalism and investigating.

That explains why the victim had no ID.

But it kind of makes it worse. You have somebody get ticked off, chase somebody down and kill them.

Easier to avoid homeless looking panhandlers.

Been many years, since I've last rode a MARTA Train, but I would think armed security guards at MARTA stations and metal detectors might help. Reality is you'll never be able to prevent all crime, but do what you can to prevent as much crime as possible. Horrible thing to be killed riding a train condolences go out to all.
