A 49 year old man stabbed to death a fellow MARTA passenger who refused to give him money. The incident occurred on a weekday night (January 24th) near the Avondale Station. Here is the link to the ajc.com article: Cops: Man murders MARTA train rider who refused to give him money

Many Metro Atlantans will read this article and have second thoughts about riding. There was also an incident a couple of years ago on a train near the Five Points Station where a Delta employee on his way to work at the Airport was brutally attacked inside the train.

I am unsure what can be done to prevent this kind of brutal, vicious violence. However, it certainly does not help MARTA in its efforts to expand and increase ridership particularly in suburban areas.

Nah, nobody who has any money and has been here for over a week would ever consider marta.

Terribly sad. There's not much more MARTA could really do. It's still an incredibly safe system overall, and I doubt that even having a cop in every rail car and bus could stop every crime.

They did, at least, figure out who the (likely) murderer is, likely by using MARTA's extensive internal security camera system.

Obviously you haven't been on the trains, or the buses. Both see riders of all walks of life.

It also doesn't help when it's posted in message boards like this every single time something happens.

Should we start posting threads about the stabbings and shootings that occur across the metro every day?

What about reporting every time someone dies on the highway commuting back and forth to those suburban areas?

It's just fear-mongering.

Oh, you mean you don't want to be treated like a big city like Chicago?

I generally think you're right, though.

Or even reporting when people are carjacked? Terrible things happen everywhere. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't do our best to prevent them but let's not pretend as if these type of situations are unique to public transit.

Yeah - you can bet it will be a cold you know what before I ride Marta anywhere except the Airport.

If I wanted public transit, I would live in a dense city. Atlanta doesn't have the smarts, tools, or political will to make Marta work. Atlanta has to go Dallas to get transit ideas! No thanks. This a city that can't get much done other than half-baked projects.

I recall days when business people tried marta. Then they realized they couldn't get to work on time because the trains weren't on time, or someone got in a fight and the train stopped, or the track was out...

Poor people use transit and that is true in every sunbelt city.
