ALPHARETTA, GA — The city of Alpharetta is now home to more than 700 tech companies. That's according to the city and Tech Alpharetta, the nonprofit that helps the city expand its lead in innovation.

There are now 704 of these companies that call the city home, which is an increase from 643 reported in 2016, Alpharetta said. Both entities recently wrapped up a count of the number of tech companies operating in the city as of December 2018. The city's tally ranged from tech startups to major companies, such as the Microsoft Technology Center in Alpharetta.

"We're excited that technology continues to be a leading industry sector in Alpharetta," said Mayor Jim Gilvin. "Our community offers significant advantages for new and relocating tech companies. Most notable is our robust infrastructure, which includes citywide power redundancies, higher than average download speeds and abundant data centers. This, coupled with our skilled workforce and thriving ecosystem, make the city extremely attractive to tech companies. Alpharetta offers the largest suburban office market in metro Atlanta, along with a flourishing downtown, outstanding schools and an excellent quality of life."

In the old days folks could stay on a job 20-30yrs, so a 15-30yr mortgage made sense. Now in IT, you cant guarantee your job or company for more than 5-10yrs at best it seems now. I would hate to move to Alpharetta and the premium to live up there and then get a job downtown or elsewhere.

Id still live in n Fulton over Gwinnett or Cobb though.

I often hear it said that people change jobs more often now but I wonder if that is actually true? Back in my day it was common to see folks change jobs fairly often.

Part of it is that with a stronger economy folks may be more willing to jump around.

I agree. In IT you tend to move every 5 to 7 years. I have been working in Alpharetta since 2005 and have held 3 jobs with 3 different companies but they were all in Alpharetta.

The last time I changed a job in 2012 the new position was practically across the street from my previous position. That's the good thing about so many companies being concentrated in one area. You can always find a position in the same area.. But then there is always a chance that you will find a job somewhere else.

And while not as pleasant as working in Alpharetta, it's a lot better commuting from North Fulton to Buckhead, Midtown or Downtown than it is to uproot your whole family because you're in an area with few opportunities.

Also the market is more competitive, esp in IT.

Your average increase yearly is say, 3-4%. Jump to a new company and its 10%, or for me the past two times nearly 20%.
