Just accepted a job offer and will be relocating to the Atlanta area next month. For the remainder of 2017 I will be working at an office in Alpharetta but the office will be moving to the Sandy Springs area in 2018. Looking for a house in the 3000 sq ft range (4 bed, 3 bath) and newer construction would be ideal but not mandatory. Budget is up to 650k. Looking for an area that feeds into great schools for elementary, middle and high school. Will also need to fly out of ATL a couple times a month. Thinking Johns Creek but worried it might be too far? Would East Cobb/Marietta be a better fit? School district is #1 priority with commute/location being a close 2nd.

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Start your search in East Cobb where the schools are recognized by many as being amongst the best in the Southeastern U.S.

You can also look in areas like Sandy Springs (where your office will be moving to next year) and neighboring Dunwoody where the schools are good but not as ultra-highly regarded as the schools are in East Cobb.

Alpharetta and Johns Creek are good areas to look just on the basis of the quality of the schools in those areas alone. But the rush hour commutes between these areas and the future location of your office in Sandy Springs will be much more challenging than a probable East Cobb-Sandy Springs commute.

With a budget of up to $650k, focus your search in the feeder zones for Walton, Pope and Lassiter high schools.

...And be prepared to act fast if you find a house that you like because the real estate market in East Cobb is white hot right now because of the exceptionally high quality of the schools in that area.

Welcome to Atlanta!

You can often search for homes by high school. In East Cobb County, search for homes in the Lassiter, Pope, Walton and Wheeler High School clusters. Riverwood and North Springs High Schools are convenient to Sandy Springs while Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview High Schools serve areas around Johns Creek. Dunwoody and Chamblee High Schools are convenient to Dunwoody. If a higher over all quality of life is of interest, you might even add the new City of Brookhaven for consideration, which is served by Cross Keys High School.

There will be plenty of free things to throughout the year in these areas, including free outdoor movies, fairs, festivals, marathons at some very well maintained parks and recreation centers. Traffic is what it is, but you'll be about as convenient as possible to an abundance of park and rides, interstates and other means of transportation to the airport.

Welcome.
