We have discussed MARTA and why it hasnt been expanded probably since citydata was started 14 years ago. We have all seen the dream maps of where it should go, where we wants it to go vs where it actually goes now.

So with all that has been going on now in the metro with demographics changing and sales tax votes, what do you think some realistic dates for a MARTA expansion would be for the following:

1. Red Line expansion to Winward Pkwy?

2. Gold Line expansion into Gwinnett, possibly to Gwinnett Place, Sugar Loaf Mills or Mall of GA?

3. South Line expansion to Southlake Mall?

4. Blue Line west expansion to Fulton Industrial or possibly 6 Flags/Thornton Rd if Cobb voted Marta?

5. Proctor Creek expansion in NW Atlanta or possibly Cumberland or Cobb County in general?

6. Blue Line East expansion to Stonecrest extended from Indian Creek?

7. I20 East Line from downtown to Stonecrest?

8. Lindbergh to Emory?

9. Streetcars running on the Beltline?

10.Streetcars on Peachtree from downtown to Lenox?

For me I would say.
1 2025 atleast to see a stop at Winward , with 2030 being more realistic as traffic continues to get worse on the North side.
2 Gold line 2030-2040, assuming a vote even passes.
3 Southlake line, maybe 2030
4 Blue line to Fulton industrial, maybe 2030 and to Six Flags or Thornton, 2040-Never
5 Proctor Creek expansion: 2030 assuming it could go close to Cumberland
6 Blue Line to Stone Crest: 2025-2030
7 Probably never and a BRT instead
8 Lindbergh 2025-2030
9 Beltine light rail would be closer to 2025-30, eventhough the right of way is already there and would only take a ver years to build
10 Probably never, but 2040-50 onwards

All depends on federal budget for FTA grants.

The answer to all of those questions is....

If you really care about mass transit, it's probably much better to just go to a city that already has it and watch it all unfold from afar than to continually beat your head against a wall in Atlanta waiting for something that might come a long time from now, or maybe even never.

All depends on sucking at the federal government tit because Atlanta and MARTA are so poorly managed and the residents lack the desire to get it done themselves.

Probably a decade away from seeing a new heavy rail station, and even then, it will likely just be one or 2 infills in rough neighborhoods. And maybe one more station on the Blue Line at 285 (maybe.) No major extensions coming any decade soon.

This is why I only really care about 2 things at this point (because they wouldn't require all the years and years of construction, nor the billions of tax money that no one local, state, or federal wants to actually pay for.) Those things are:

1. Commuter Rail

2. Autonomous Cars

The first is starting to sound like a real possibility at some point, because even conservatives are talking about it. And the second is being driven closer and closer every year by the infinitely less slow and bureaucratic private sector.

I'd bank on those 2, as our only real hope for any relief/alternatives to driving in traffic.

I know, Atlanta should man up like every other city, they don't take federal funds to build their mass transit system. Wait, that just doesn't really happen.

Mindless Atlanta-bashing by our resident troll aside, no, we should't rely on federal matching funds. Because it's unreliable as is, and President Turdface will probably discontinue all those grants and programs anyway.

We should go with cost-effective solutions, and then use our own various state and local taxes to pay for them.

Hint hint, commuter rail on existing tracks and corridors, instead of mega-expensive heavy rail. And buses instead of streetcars. And quality light rail only for key corridors with prominent destinations, like Emory and the eastside Beltline.

What about the $3 billion sales tax we just voted in and which started 3 weeks ago?

Seems like we ought to be able to do something with that kind of money.

If nothing else, carve out 2% and put 500 new buses on the road.

There are a lot of people whose lives will be greatly and immediately improved by that.

They just aren't the people who contribute greatly to economic prosperity.

Sorry, that's the reality.
