There are some other threads on the sale and Braves politics, but this redevelopment deserves it's own thread.

Longer term vision:

What is in development now:

Quote:
Georgia State University will own the stadium property, which they will renovate into their football stadium. They will also construct a new baseball field with approximately 1,500 seats, on the former Atlanta Fulton County Stadium location.

Phase I of the private development includes:
  1. Up to 200 multi-family apartment units
  2. Redevelopment of Georgia Avenue, including existing retail and retail in new standalone buildings and creative/loft space
  3. Up to 850 bed student housing project
  4. Corporate build-to-suite office

There's a plan to put a streetcar on Capitol Ave, and also a plan to have a roundabout at Capitol Ave @ Memorial.

One of those 2 things can't happen. I wonder which one it will be. (Or maybe neither will happen.)

Thanks for starting a new thread for this; I hadn't seen some of these new renderings. If this is executed the way it's being designed, it's going to be a huge win for downtown and all the surrounding neighborhoods.

Yeah, that "Future of Georgia Avenue" render is new from today's Streets Alive festival and I was going to put it in another thread but there didn't seem to be one that was really focused on the redevelopment itself that I could find. I think those long-term renders at the top got fairly wide circulation but many of the recent ones that have come out in the last few months didn't get a lot of coverage either.

It is really impressive to think about how big of an impact this development will have in the long term.

They are really only developing along Georgia Ave initially. But they will still end up with a dozen+ good sized retail spaces and over 1,000 beds. Many large mixed-use redevelopments in the metro are lucky to get more than 500 beds (Avalon, The Battery, Madison Yards) when they are all built out. But there will still be a lot of this 72 acre site left to go once this is done. Think we will see a lot of exciting things happening with this site for years to come.

Interesting that the housing is further away from campus. But I guess students are a little more willing to walk than most and having the office buildings closer to downtown makes them easier to lease.

Finger are crossed that these plans will come to fruition. It's probably a blessing that the Braves moved to STP, to make way for this necessary type of development in Summerhill. I was always told a child..."If you wanna make an omelet, you gotta break some eggs"
