I know people hate the idea of black culture being such an important culture in Atlanta, but stuff like this goes much further in making the city unique than many of the tourist traps we have here. The Aquarium obviously isn't a tourist trap, but it's not unique either for a visitor that has been to a large aquarium before.

The problem with Atlanta, is that our truly unique tourist atrractions are so spread out and many located outside of the downtown/midtown area that the average person who comes to Atlanta isn't going to experience it. Places like New York, Chicago and Miami are going to attract more foreign visitors to the US than Atlanta and those cities all have their biggest tourist draws right in the heart of their cities. If you go to New York its easy to hit Times Square, Empire State Building and Broadway, because they are all right there centralized and very easy to find for the tourist. Here in Atlanta places that are truly unique like Stone Mountain, Chattahoochee Nature and River Walk Preserve, Porsche Driving Experience (which is awesome BTW), these places are not that easy to find for the tourist that has never been to Atlanta.

But places like CNN Center, Aquarium, Human right Center, Cyclorama, Word of Coke, etc are going to be where the tourists are going to go. They are easy to find and get to without a car. Yes they are boring to people like us, because we either live here, have lived here or been here enough times that these things become blasé But the same is true for longtime New Yorkers. You think they find Times Square worth going to, hell no. New Yorkers avoid the crap that tourists are drawn to, just like Atlantans do. This is true for every city. I have a friend that has a daughter from a previous marriage in the UK and when she comes to visit we always have to go to the CNN Center. She just loves it. Because CNN is such a big news network for keeping up with what is going on in America when you live overseas. Me and my friend just smile every time she comes here because we have to go to the stupid CNN Center so many times it loses all relevance, but again a tourist likes it.

Atlanta has had so many contributions made by African Americans it is unreal. Atlanta was the birthplace of the civil rights movement in the South and the birthplace of Doctor King. We have two prestigious HBCU here in Atlanta, the Cascade and Little Five Points area are filled with unique culture. But again a little of the beaten path and not something the average tourist is going to stumble across.

I think Atlanta's Black History spots are under advertised and that is a shame. But more frequent visitors have started to venture out beyond the Downtown - Marietta Street, Lucky Street, and Peachtree Street area. It just usually takes more than one or two visits for people to get the courage to take the treks. Of course our woeful traffic doesn't help matters. So linking these hidden gems to MARTA would be a big start.
