People are going soft. The GDOT made its bones building highways, not bike paths.

If they want a protected downtown, flip 278 and S. Avondale, but 278 through the area should be widened to match each side, not narrowed even further.
They want a more human-scaled downtown and town. US 278 is 2 lanes between Candler Dr and East Lake Dr, so it's not like this is creating a bottleneck if further downstream the roadway is similar capacity.
Also, widening S. Avondale fixes nothing, you are still cutting off most of the town from it's downtown via a car sewer.

Try learning about the dynamics of the area before making such statements. Between Candler and the western end of the road, you have Howard street which becomes Dekalb Avenue so you have two streets on each side of the tracks. West of Decatur, 278 doesn't have nearly the traffic because you no longer have the same big anchor that Decatur is, it's basically uniform residential. Plus by that point, you're getting closer to other E-W routes, like those you already mentioned, except here, they're actually close enough to help carry capacity between the same general areas.

You act like it's a huge big deal to walk across a four-lane road, or take a golf cart across it. It isn't. If you can walk a mile and a half to get to the zoo, then I think most people are capable of walking across a road.

Valid point. I've heard it argued that it was no big deal for people to walk a mile from the Georgia State MARTA station to Turner Field in the boiling sun.

There will also be fewer turn lanes
LOL, what a bunch of idiots. The only time a road diet is even remotely helpful is if you are adding a turn lane. Clearly, the point of this is to harm commuters.

If Avondale Estates wants to give the rest of Dekalb the finger, so be it. Don't punish them, reward them with what they requested These people voted for refugees, so let them have it. Shift the resettlement from south Dekalb to Avondale Estates.

Please clarify your connection between refugees and the road diet.

He's a rather ignorant and unabashed national-isolationist if the thread on Somali refugees is to be taken as any indication.
