I wouldn't get overly excited. This is a request for rezoning. The owners are entitling the land so they can (probably) sell to developers when there is market demand. Unless they're targeting affordable housing, and even that would be limited due to only so many LIHTC credits and other programs to go around, this would be years down the line considering pipeline and the current lending environment.

Well the happiness is that the people who are controlling it are long time lovers of the neighborhood and are not so money hungry that they would sell it to anyone with a dollar. They have other goals in mind.

Why would anyone be pissed about those eyesores being torn down? What use could they possibly have without major amounts of renovation?
Because you are tearing down and removing the history of a HBCU, Morris Brow College.

I don't think this is part of Morris Brown. These were apartments for senior citizens.

Maybe finally the area will get some developments worthy of the prestigious institutions it surrounds. Most of the top African American students from around the world should not be in the hood or ghetto. This area should be bustling even without the Mercedes Benz Stadium development.

Too bad Morris Brown should've thought about that before its leadership ran the school into the ground.

The buildings in question are Middleton Towers which were dorms.

Do you know this? For all you know they'll entitle the land then sell it to at all, or piecemeal, to random developers.

Agreed. But if I understand the history of the area correctly, the current state of many (not all) of the surrounding neighborhoods is due to the nasty nature of white flight.

What a awesome middle finger to these horrible past actions it will be once the area arrives at its full potential.

It appears that the John A. Middleton Towers towers were fire damaged and were torn down this week.

AJC - Fire-damaged former Morris Brown dorm has been torn down
