So its warm and May and my front yard is still mostly brown with a few patches of green. Is this normal with Emerald Zoysia? I paid 5k to lay it last year and am now wondering if it was the right choice as walking around my area most other lawns look to be Zoysia (maybe not Emerald) and are already green. Done a ton of online research and still can't get a correct answer and even wondering if the weed people put too much chemicals down etc.

Nah, Zoysia is always one of the last grasses to green up. As long as you have patches of green, I think it'll be alright. Mine is greening up, but still not all the way there yet. Zoysia loves the sun and hates the shade, so if it's not in a well lit place it may have some trouble.

I love zoysia, such a beautiful grass. Such a horrible, horrible, horrible grass to cut, though. It's so thick and you can't mulch it without it clumping everywhere.

I'm not sure what type mine is, but its Zoysia. Its pretty much 80% green.

I've had all grasses. I love the green of fescue but have determined that grass is for suckers. Large expense and it dies off. Repeat.

My neighbor's Zoysia is totally green right now.
Is your lawn in full sun?

Fescue seems to do pretty well in my neighborhood. I just don't like Zoysia. I'm trying to get Bermuda to grow, but its also a late greening grass.

It should be greening up. Have you fed it?

Trust Walter

Zoysia – General Notes | Walter Reeves: The Georgia Gardener

My grass (Bermuda) always greens up later than my neighbors because of the amount of sun I get. Plus many of my neighbors have more weeds than me and what they have is green weeds not grass.

Our Emerald Zoysia is 95% green. We have a patch or two that lag the rest of the yard. I apply Turf Builder to it in mid April. Perhaps try feeding it. It's a hardy grass.

My neighbor uses Turf Builder on his Zoysia as well, which I guess explains why it's so green now.

There are such better uses for yards than lawns; which absorb little runoff, require a lot of chemicals to 'look nice', and cost a lot to maintain.
