It will also host the NCAA Final Four in the upcoming years and be in the rotation to host the CFB Playoff and Semifinal every other year, in addition to the SEC Championship every year. This thing is massive, and it will be an Atlanta $$$ making.

MBS is already scheduled to host these championship events. In the first 50 days after opening, the stadium will host nearly 1 million visitors.

2018 CFB Championship
2019 Final Four
2020 Super Bowl

Yeah, it's been a nightmare for the architects/construction crews to get the roof working. Hopefully they'll get it fixed this season (they're saying it will be ready some time this fall, but who knows). I've seen pics of the roof open, and it looks really cool.

On another note, the reporter in that piece said the stadium is the same square footage as Washington, D.C. LOL, that can't be right...

That's not quite accurate.

The nightmare has been the complexity of the fixed roof structure itself. They have opened/closed the roof at least four times during construction. What this article is referring to is automating the open/closing process. Currently each "petal" is operated independently, which takes several hours. Once it is mechanized, a single button will operate all of the petals and it can open or close in about 15 minutes.

Steve Cannon, the CEO of the AMB Group which owns Mercedes-Benz Stadium, told 11Alive on Monday that crews are continuing to work on automating the eight petal roof. But he said the roof's issues will be forgotten by the start of the 2018 MLS and NFL seasons.
