I'm 18 years old, and I just moved to NYC from a small town in Maryland 4 months ago.

I'm looking for something in between. Maryland was too slow for me, and New York is too hectic and expensive. I'm trying to go to take a couple classes at a community college and work part time. I just don't want to have to keep moving around.

Am I going to need a car?

For what? One's a cool small college town and the other is a really big city.

Give me some specifics to compare...

My Dad eventually wants me to establish some sort of residency.

I think you're a little young to worry about residency unless it's for tuition purposes.

I think you'd like either Athens or Atlanta. Choose based on which place has a school and job that would suit you. Probably more options in Atlanta.

I've lived in both Athens and Atlanta and I'm fairly young (21) so I might be able to help you out here. Atlanta isn't really a big city (buildings wise), but more like a bunch of suburbs combined together to make a big city. Athens is a very small town with a lot of college students, but it might be too "slow" for your taste. Personally, if you're 18 yrs old I would recommend Athens because the town provides a great atmosphere for college students...oh and you can find places to live for really cheap. I recommend living at the summit...stay away from the reserve. good luck

To answer the question you asked near the end, yes, you will need a car.

Athens is a smaller city/town and you'll need a car to get around. Atlanta has a limited subway system (MARTA) with bus service, but it doesn't hit a ton of day-to-day stuff. In theory you could live without a car here, but you'll be limited.

Athens may be close to the small Maryland town atmosphere you left behind. Atlanta cannot be compared to NYC in any sense good or bad - completely different types of cities.
